Adam Smith, author of The Wealth of Nations, also wrote The Theory of Moral Sentiments. He described 'the man within us' as 'the vice regent of the deity' or, in today's parlance, conscience. The separation of these two works has given us a distorted notion of how free-market capitalism should work. Capitalism without conscience leads to corruption.
The less that individuals practise an internal audit of personal integrity, the more there is a need for regulation and legislation. The Enron and WorldCom scandals starkly emphasise the need to restore motivations of personal integrity into the corridors of corporate power. Smith seemed to suggest that these spring from moral and spiritual roots. In a globalised world, there is a patent need to globalise ethical practice.
