A sparkle of hope
When their teenage son Jimmy was tragically murdered the day after his 16th birthday two years ago, Barry and Margaret Mizen from South London set up the Jimmy Mizen Foundation in his memory. It aims to promote the development of young people through supporting youth organisations and apprenticeship placements. They will tell their moving story.

‘People matter and ideas matter’ says major UN history study

A major study of the economic and social impact of the United Nations, just completed, has concluded that ‘people matter and ideas matter’, says the projects co-director, Sir Richard Jolly. Sir Richard, who has overseen the UN Intellectual History Project, shared some of the ‘untold successes’ of the UN at a Greencoat Forum at the London Centre for Initiatives of Change on 18 May.Esme McAvoy reports.

Sir Richard was an Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations from 1982-2000, first with UNICEF and afterwards for UNDP where from 1996-2000 he was responsible for the Human Development Report. His latest book is UN Ideas that Changed the World.

Declaring that the earth is not a ‘limitless larder’, The Rt Rev James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool, called for action on a ‘personal, parochial and political level’ to tackle the challenges of climate change. He urged that this should be an electoral issue. He was speaking in London in the week just before the Copenhagen summit on climate change.
